NB After cutting the card to size, the measuring for the drawers and sleeves is done on a score board. I have included measurements for the Eazi-score and the Groovy Scoreboards. If you use a thicker card than 160gsm your sizing will alter, so please check the measurements.
After you have made your first drawer make a sleeve and check if any adjustment is needed to the size of the sleeve
Materials
Messy Rabbit Christmas CD Collection
For drawers and sleeves:-
24 Sheets 160gsm thin card plus 4 sheets to stabilize each layer of boxes
24 Brass Paper Fasteners
2 Sheets A4 JS Gentle Gloss Photo Paper (you can use up to eight sheets depending on the number of different backing sheets used on the drawer fronts)
Optional – 1 sheet JS Mirri silk card for extra layering on drawer fronts
Peel-off numbers 1 to 24
For box cover:-
2 Sheets A4 JS Mirri Card
3 Sheets JS Gentle Gloss Photo Paper for Toppers
2 Sheets A4 Card for top and base of box
Peel-offs letters to spell recipients name
Sticky stuff: - I used Double Sided Tape, Collall Photo Glue, Silicone Glue, and Sellotape.
Optional: - Kitchen Towel holder (pole type). This enables the Advent box to be spun round. Shorten the pole so it does not protrude above the top of the box.
I printed eight different backing sheets (will use left-over’s on another card). I also printed a sheet of embellishments and five images from the CDs. I used the middle sized portrait images and captured them and imported them into my word processing programme (instructions on the CD).
Step 1 using an Eazi Score Board
Using 160gsm thin card cut 24 pieces of card 85mm x 210mm (for the sleeve) and 24 pieces 160mm x 190mm (for the box).
To make a template for marking the score lines for the sleeve, cut an extra piece of card 85mm x 210mm and starting at the left measure four sections, 56mm: 35mm: 56mm: 35mm wide. The excess is used to join the sleeve together. Use the template to mark and score the 24 sleeves (See Pic).
Apply double sided tape to the excess (shown in green), trim and join to form the box sleeve (See Pic C in step four).
Step 1 using the Groovy Scoreboard
Using 160gsm thin card cut 24 pieces of card 85mm x 210mm (for the sleeve) and 24 pieces 160mm x 190mm (for the box).
To make a template for marking the score lines for the sleeve, cut an extra piece of card 85mm x 210mm and starting at the left measure four sections, 56mm: 33mm: 56mm: 33mm wide. The excess is used to join the sleeve together. Use the template to mark and score the 24 sleeves (See Fig. 1a).
Apply double sided tape to the excess (shown in green), trim and join to form the box sleeve (See Pic C in step four).
Step 2 using an Eazi-Score board.
To make the box - Take a piece of 160mm x 190mm thin card and butt up to the side bar of the scoreboard. Score using Groove One (shown in red) and score using Groove Three (shown in Green). Do a quarter turn and score using Grooves One and Three. Repeat on the remaining two sides (See Pic 2).
Cut away the three corner rectangles marked “X” on all four sides. (See Pic in steps 2 & 3).
Step 2 using the Groovy scoreboard.
To make the box - Take a piece of 160mm x 190mm thin card and butt up to the side bar of the scoreboard (scoring tool holder at the left). Score using Groove One (shown in green), quarter turn and repeat on all four sides (See Pic).
Step 2b using the Groovy scoreboard.
Turn the Groovy box over and butt the card up to the side bar which says “Box Lid” Score on all four sides using groove one (Shown in red) (See pic).
Cut away the three corner rectangles marked “X” on all four sides. (See pics in step 2b & 3).
Step 3
To make the tabs for assembling the box, cut a slim wedge vertically into both sides of the four corners A & B. Shown in Green on “A” and cut-out on “B” (See pic). Ensure all the wedges are cut out of A & B and not the section horizontally between them.
Step 4
Using Gentle Gloss photo paper print out two sheets of A4 backing paper to cover the box fronts, and cut 24 fronts 50mm x 28mm. Fix to the box front and attach a paper fastener as a drawer knob. Right side facing, stick double sided tape to the four corner tabs. Do not remove the backing. (See pic A). Wrong side facing, fix double sided tape to the four outer long (top edge of box) tabs. (See pic B).
Crease all the score lines and with wrong side facing bring one of the short tabs (See pic A) to the inside of the box so the corner of the box is vertical and the paper fastener is covered. Remove the backing from the double sided tape and stick. Repeat with the adjacent tab (the paper fastener should now be hidden). Fold inwards and stick down the top edge of the box. Assemble the opposite side of the box, then fold inwards and stick the remaining top edges of the box. (See pic C)
Make 24 boxes and box sleeves. Stick the numbers 1 to 24 on the boxes
Step 5
Arrange the boxes in six groups of four. Three of the groups with the drawer opening at the right (See pic A and pic in step 6) and three of the groups with the drawer opening at the left. Attach the four sleeved boxes together with small pieces of sellotape.
To stabilize the four boxes cut seven pieces of thin card 135mm square and stick one to the top of each groups of boxes. If you want to place the finished calendar box on a kitchen roll holder cut a square out of the centre before fixing. (See pic B). Stick the seventh piece of thin card to the underside of the bottom group of boxes.
Step 6
Join each group of four boxes together three sets with drawers at the left and three sets drawers at the right. (See pic).
Step 7
Cut eight pieces of card to cover the sides of the boxes. Mine measured 85mm x 109mm (Eazi-score), and 85mm x 103mm (Groovy) but you may have a slight variation.
Decorate to suit and add names if desired. (See pic).
Cut a piece of card slightly larger than the top and the bottom of the box and fix, cutting a square out of the centre for the kitchen roll holder (if required).
The finished box measures approximately 230mm x 145mm (Eazi-score). 205mm x 145mm (Groovy).
